Toast

Finally, a book on Toast. Why did it take so long? Toast has been around for a long time (the book has a chapter on the fascinating history of toast). Cookbooks come out daily, maybe even hourly, for the in-and-trendy folks. But do any of them cover toast?
Have you seen anything about toast in those books by Jamie Oliver, Nigelia Lawson, or Jane Grigson? No, their books are toast free. The history of toast . . . one theory has it that toasting was born in Egypt around 3000 BC. Egyptian bakers found that drying bread in front of open fired made the bread stay mould-free much longer. There's a recipe for what is regarded by many as the British National Dish: Beans on Toast. There's also a recipe for the ultimate use of toast: The Toast Sandwich, a slice of toast placed between two slices of toast.
Is anything missing . . . anything else we'd like to see in the book?
Yes, we would like to have seen an index in it. With an index, we could find toast tidbits quicker.
