Vineyards in France – and flying saucers and other UFOs

May 18, 2004

Dear DMC,

Actually this is quite a sensible one from France.

Since 1952 it has been illegal to land a flying saucer or other UFO in the vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape.

Dear DMC,      Here is an entry for the silly laws section.       In New South Wales, Australia, it is legal to relieve yourself in public if you do it next the rear left tyre. This goes back to the horse and buggy days when there was a part of the carriage used for such purposes.   Popinjay

Dear Popinjay,

Thanks for the report. That’s great to know.

Except it would be a long trip for many of us to get to New South Wales. Dull men are patient, but I don’t think we could wait that long.

It might come as a surprise to you, but not all our members are accountants. Or actuaries. There also are some lawyers. They read laws for hours on end. Dull laws. There are a few exceptions, however. Once in a while, they come across a silly law.

Here are examples:

In Chicago, it is illegal to eat in a place that is on fire.   In Indiana, it is illegal to go to a theatre within four hours of eating garlic.   In Nebraska, it is illegal to go whale fishing.   In Lehigh Nebraska, it is illegal to sell donut holes.   In Utah, it is illegal for first cousins to marry before they reach 65.

In France, at least 70% of the music radio stations broadcast must be by French composers.
