Figs

November is a time to celebrate figs. November marks the end of the fig harvest in many locals. Figs are good for you. High fiber and high nutritional value . . . fat-free, sodium-free, cholesterol-free . . . not to mention the great taste. And they are portable.Figs are an often overlooked fruit. (Dull men can identify with being overlooked.) California has a great web site about figs . . . a site that doesn't overlook figs: http://www.californiafigs.com/index.html. It as a History of Figs. Oodles of fig recipes. Dull men in California's San Joaquin Valley have a fun activity . . . they like to watch figs dry.

[Until we realized that figs needed attention, we felt that there should be no "Dull Event of the Month" for November.  This speaks for itself -- November is one of the dullest months of the year.  November is almost as dull as February, the dullest month of the year. By the time November rolls around, the skies are gray, the leaves have stopped falling, snow has not yet started to fall. All November has is Thanksgiving.  Where we eat turkey, one of the blandest foods there is to eat. Even normal seasonings like salt and pepper -- not even catsup or Worcestershire sauce -- will help however.  We resort to cranberries.]

Anorak of the Month

We have decided not to announce a new Anorak for this month.  That would be too exciting.  Therefore, wear the anorak from October. Here's October's choice . . . click on the link below to see a picture of a great anorak . . . suitable for Fall . . . as it is hunting season in many places, we've chosen an anorak in hunter green.

Other Events

McDonald’s Ends Foam Packaging Anniversary

November 1, 1990. A momentous day in history, the day McDonald’s Corporation announced it would phase out it use of polystyrene plastic foam containers and use paper containers instead.

We appreciated the fact that they didn’t rush into it — instead they "phased out" the change. If change has to happen (we usually prefer that it doesn’t happen), we Dull Men don’t like it happing fast.

One of our members, Homer A, Halquist, has a nice collection of the old polystyrene plastic foam containers.

National Fig Week

November 1 – 7. To celebrate the completion of the fig harvest. Now there’s an event we don’t want to miss. For more info go to www.californiafigs.com.

Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month

Celebration of America’s favorite food and #1 sandwich. And don’t put the sandwiches in polystyrene plastic foam containers.

London Bridge Days

November 2 – 8. Celebration at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, of the move of London Bridge to Arizona.

We approve the move. It was too exciting to see the bridge in London. Arizona is more fitting.

National Notary Public Day

November 7. To recognize the fundamental contributions made by notaries to the people of the U.S. We agree, American business is the success it is largely because of notaries. For more info go to www.notaries.com.

National Split Pea Soup Week

November 8 – 14. To promote the use of split peas in split pea soup. It makes so much sense to use split peas instead of whole peas in soup. For more info email pulse@pea-lentil.com.

Pursuit of Happiness Week

November 8 – 14. To remind everyone, as stated in the Declaration of Independence, that all men and women are "endowed by the creator with certain unalienable rights, that among them are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." And always remember that "it’s okay to be dull."

Holland Tunnel Anniversary

November 13, 1927, the Holland Tunnel, running under the Hudson River from New York City to Jersey City, opened.

This is one of our favorite tunnels. Because it doesn’t go to Holland. It goes to New Jersey, one of our favorite states (if you can’t find it in New Jersey, you’re right . . . there’s not much there).

We like tunnels. We like to tour them. And take pictures:
