The Exciting World of Rail Gauges

October 8, 2004

Dear DMC,

Your members who like trainspotting may be interested in this very dull list of railway gauges used around the world

http://parovoz.com/spravka/gauges-e.html.

I was especially bored to learn that the Yucatan horse tramway in Mexico has a gauge of 1 foot 7 1/2 inches.    The site does use a rather large amount of racy red text, and even has an exclamation point, but I am sure other dull men will agree that the pure dullness of railway gauge data outweighs any unwarranted excitement these faults may cause.

"Why I want a hidden driveway"

September 5, 2004

Dear DMC,

It comes as a fine prelude to your main event for September -- September is Hidden Driveway Month for the DMC – I see that on his Progressive Revelations website on August 27, 2004, Greg Gagliardi explains why he would like to have his own hidden driveway. The advantages Greg sees in having a hidden driveway is that it would cut down on random visits from people he doesn't want to see, it would add to the mystique of his persona, and it might even do away for his need for having a car – if no one can see his car, why should he have one? Webb Seitz

Dear Webb,

Thanks for telling us about this website. You are right, it is right up our alley.

By the way Webb, we still chuckle each time we read about your experience at the Computer Help Desk. Click here to find Webb's "Fun Times at the Computer Help Desk."

American Political Platforms

Republican Platform "The American Dream: Prosperity with a Purpose"

Even duller than the Democratic Platform. Click here

August 29, 2004

"The Democratic Platform for America"

American's political conventions the parties' platforms are our favorite (dullest) feature of these conventions.

Most people pay little or no attention to the parties' platforms. Everett Dirksen once said something like, "Those platforms are something we stand on only during the convention. After that, we run as far away from them as we can."

We in the DMC like these platforms. They are truly boring to read. They especially come in handy in August which is National Napping Month.

Here is the link to the one from the Democrats, "The Democratic Platform for America": http://www.dems2004.org/site/pp.asp?c=luI2LaPYG&b=97933. It is 37 pages, single space.

Watching Paint Dry -- the ultimate in reality TV

May 31, 2004

The Ultimate in Reality Television Watching Paint Dry

Dear DMC,

An update on this traditional dull activity from The Sunday Times News Review, 30 May.

TV sensation of the week

The UKTV Style channel has unveiled the ultimate in reality television: watching paint dry. Each day for the next eight weeks some paint will be daubed on a wall and viewers will be able to watch it dry by logging on to www.uktvstyle.co.uk.

“The beauty of Watching Paint Dry lies in the simplicity,” reports The Guardian. “But here’s the twist: there will be a different kind of paint each day. Viewers will be able to vote for their favourite paint. Every Friday the paint with the fewest votes will leave the show.”

Cambourne Village Marker Sculptures

This site [click here] is wonderful. It explains the background and shows pictures of the proposed Cambourne Village Marker Sculptures. These markers will reflect the history of the site: farming, monks tiling the land, fruit growing. They also will reference people’s obsessions with objects and in particular tools.

What we especially like will be the long drawn-out process of printing the designs in the Cambourne Crier, soliciting feedback, queries and thoughts on the designs, meeting face to face to face discussions about them with the designer, plus workshops. This is a great way to let any excitement about them dissipate before they ever get erected.

TV Antennas . . . problems with self-installing . . . worth taking a look at

  January 22, 2004

Dear DMC,

I found this gallery of common problems with shelf-installed TV aerials. There are many pictures and wise words. Sensible men everywhere will surely this as a worthwhile cautionary experience:
